WHP water sample property comparisons are being carried out from the crossing one-time survey lines in the North Pacific. Water sample salinity, oxygen and nutrients in the .SEA files are interpolated on the theta surfaces ranging from 1.0°C to 1.6°C with the interval of 0.5°C (1.45° and 1.55°C surfaces are not included). The comparisons are done at the crossing among the one- time survey lines. When the distance between the stations from each line is close enough, within several nautical miles, the comparison was directly carried out for these overlaying stations. Otherwise when the overlaying stations are not available, comparisons were made using the 2 stations along each line closest to the intersection.
On the salinity comparisons, the SSW offsets for recent batches are derived using the several SSW comparison results, which appeared in the cruise reports, unpublished comparisons and previously published sources (Mantyla, 1987: Takatsuki et al., 1991; Mantyla, 1994). The adjusted salinity differences generally become smaller than before and meet the accuracy within 0.002 PSS requsted as WHP one-time survey standards for water samples. Though the relatively larger differences ranging from +0.003 PSS to +0.007 PSS are found at some intersections, the reason is not yet known.
These comparisons for salinity, oxygen, and nutrients will be presented at the Workshop, perhaps in the electronic Pacific WHP one-time Altas.
