TheWorld Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE) announces a workshop on the large-scale physical oceanography of the Pacific Ocean to be held August 19-23, 1996 in Newport Beach, California. The purpose of the workshop is to facilitate progress toward the scientific and technical goals of WOCE for the Pacific basin. It will bring together scientists who are working on various aspects of in situ and satellite data sets and models and encourage their interaction. Synthesis of all of the elements of the data sets and models will be encouraged to study various aspects of the general circulation.
One objective of the meeting will be to focus work towards joint publications. The Journal of Geophysical Research (Oceans) has indicated an interest in publishing a special issue to assemble some of these results.
A second objective is to focus assembly of the Pacific WOCE data set and extant model results prior to the workshop, for use by Pacific WOCE investigators. Progress toward an atlas of the Pacific Ocean, as well as computer-based databases, will be a result of the workshop.
The meeting will be centered around working groups focused on both purely scientific and mixed scientific/technical interests. Each working group will report on work in progress and make plans for future studies. Plenary sessions will provide general discussion of progress and issues raised by the working groups. Plenary sessions will also include a small number of invited talks reviewing primary scientific topics for Pacific WOCE with the goal of stimulating work both at the workshop and afterward. At this time, the following have agreed to give these talks:
In order to facilitate discussion and enable attendees to identify potential collaborators, meeting attendees (and interested others) are requested to electronically submit a one page abstract summarizing their current research. More than one abstract is acceptable if the topics are significantly different. These will be consolidated into a book and distributed to each attendee at registration. A separate booklet will be provided at the end of the meeting with a complete listing of attendees and their addresses and phone numbers.
If possible, we would like to identify working group topics, their members and special requirements prior to the meeting. Members of such working groups are encouraged to initiate communications and possibly joint work prior to the workshop so the time at the workshop is used efficiently.
In addition to the normal meeting requirements of an auditorium and working group rooms, the workshop will have a local 10Mbit Ethernet connected to the Internet at T1 (1.5Mbit) speed or slower. Connections to the local Ethernet will probably be of the 10Base2 and/or AUI variety. A list of workshop provided computing/printing facilities is not available at this time. Some participants will be bringing their own workstations. Software for display and processing can possibly be provided if requirements are known in advance.
An ftp site at Scripps Institution of Oceanography for data drop-off prior to the workshop will be provided.
All guest rooms have two phone lines and computer access (but not Ethernet) capability.
Attendees are requested to provide information on the data sets and model results that they will make available at the meeting. While we hope to be able to provide access to a large number of WOCE Pacific basin data sets, attendees are reminded that many of these are still held by principal investigators (PIs) and have been provided by them especially for this meeting. It is requested that all attendees abide by the data sharing policy laid down by the international WOCE Science Steering Group. This states that data shall not be distributed unless specifically approved by the originating PI. While originating investigators are strongly encouraged to share their data as soon as possible, investigators receiving such data sets shall not publish any paper during the publication rights period based predominantly on the received data, should co-author results with the originating investigator, and should not redistribute the data.
